  • Maintain an ongoing relationship with the west county school systems.

  • Present educational programs to parents and staff in West County.

Team:

Challenges:

  • Parent participation in the presentations

Progress: Working with the following districts, we met with the superintendent and principals, and some teachers: Oakgrove, Gravenstein, Sebastopol Union, Fort Ross, Cazadero, and Monte Rio. In 2022 presentations were made to Oakgrove and Sebastopol Union. Analysis of the process leads to changes being made to the presentation method in 2023; with emphasis placed on resilience in the face of the challenges of COVID and the 2023 flooding in west Sonoma County. In the Spring 2023 presentations and discussions were done in Monte Rio, Forestville, and Guerneville. In Fall 2023, parent discussion sessions are continuing at Forestville and Monte Rio schools.

Sonoma County ACEs Connection

The importance of our childhood experiences. The more adversity and trauma someone experienced as a child, the higher their risk of negative health outcomes as an adult—like diabetes, heart disease, or depression. We look at why this correlation exists by seeing how stress and adversity affect brain development and genetics and discuss what we can do in our communities to build resilience against the effects of trauma.
